Every project we undertake focuses on addressing current challenges while anticipating and planning for future needs. Our work on the Easton Road Roundabouts in Doylestown Township demonstrates this commitment.
In collaboration with our client PennDOT District 6-0, we designed a dumbbell roundabout to transform a difficult series of high-speed, high-volume junctures into safer, more efficient intersections. Our alternative design improves safety, operations, access, and mobility for all road users, including drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, and transit riders.
During the planning phase in 2017, Urban collaborated with PennDOT District 6-0 as part of the Districtwide Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP). The program identified and recommended safety improvements for high-crash intersections across the district through a data-driven screening process. Easton Road was one of the locations identified. Through PennDOT Connects, our effective communication, close stakeholder collaboration with stakeholders, and adaptability to changing project needs enabled us to deliver an innovative solution.
Our process began with a comprehensive crash data analysis at the Easton Road intersections. Recognizing the need for a solution that would reduce vehicle speeds, improve traffic flow, and enhance accessibility for all transportation modes, we designed an interconnected pair of single-lane roundabouts. This design addressed immediate safety concerns while anticipating future traffic and development demands. Ensuring long-term efficiency and adaptability while minimizing future maintenance for PennDOT and Doylestown Township. Key elements of this Doylestown Township Gateway opportunity included multiuse trail connections, enhanced SEPTA bus stops, ADA-compliant sidewalks, and improved lighting.
From the outset, Urban facilitated close collaboration with PennDOT, Bucks County Planning Commission, Doylestown Township, local developers, and landowners to ensure their voices were heard. Our proactive engagement included multiple presentations to the township board of directors, regular updates, extensive early coordination with utility providers, and maintaining open lines of communication. This approach kept the project on track and developed trust and alignment among all involved parties.
Moreover, Urban prioritized community engagement, hosting one of District 6-0’s first virtual public meetings during the COVID-19 pandemic. This adaptation ensured that residents remained informed and had a platform to share their insights.
Our design team’s proactive approach to constructability successfully guided the project through all phases—from preliminary engineering through final construction oversight. Our team thoughtfully located the proposed roundabout locations to enhance creative traffic control schemes. By coordinating closely with our partners and initiating utility work early, we facilitated an accelerated construction timeline, delivering the project an unprecedented 19 months ahead of schedule without compromising quality.
