Turn Table

Railroad Facility Kansas City

Railroads are 24/7 operations. With more than 50 active engineering contracts, our team has the demonstrated experience to work with you to grow and improve railroad systems across the country.

  • Construction Support
  • Design

The construction management (CM) of passenger rail and transit projects has become a focused and targeted service for Urban. Our recent and relevant rail assignments include serving as construction manager for the $230 million Meadowlands Railroad & Roadway Improvements, SEPTA’s $180 million Frankford Transportation Center, and New Jersey Transit’s Morrisville Yard, Phase I project. We are also a General Engineering Consultant for CM services for New Jersey Transit.

The construction management services we provide our clients requires a mastery of the complexities inherent in working on active railroads. Urban’s CM services include monitoring operations, coordinating working trades, cost control, scheduling, and maintaining documentation of work progress. Our CM teams are embedded on-site and, therefore, are trained and well-versed in railroad-specific protocols associated with safety, communications, and quality control.

Our team of rail-oriented design professionals are committed to achieving sustainable, economical, and high-quality facilities. Our portfolio includes a myriad of railroad service facilities, including locomotive maintenance, rapid repair, fueling, washing, operations, and welfare buildings.

Service & Repair Facilities

Safer facilities, better ergonomics, and efficient workflows begin with a thorough understanding of railroad shop operation needs.  We provide railroad clients with the highest quality facilities thanks to our in-depth knowledge and first-hand experience working in these environments. Our team applies our diverse command of code compliance and regulatory implementation into the design and construction of rail facilities.

Yards & Terminals

We manage projects with an eye on minimizing impacts to active rail lines, yards, terminals, and other facilities. We are actively engaged in updating rail yards and terminals throughout the country to meet rising customer needs. Our integrated multi-disciplinary staff includes planners, designers, and construction professionals who have decades of experience solving the toughest of challenges related to rail yard and terminal projects. We offer expertise across a range of service platforms, including environmental, site/utilities, stormwater management, track geometry, grading, erosion and sedimentation control, permit applications, project staging, procurement support, and construction management.

Owner's Representation

We are one of the founding Project Management Oversight Program (PMO) consultants and have overseen more projects under the PMO program than any other consulting firm in the nation. Since 2003, Urban has provided oversight services on major capital programs in New York City for the Federal Transit Administration. Across the nation, we have provided oversight for numerous projects from New York City to the Rocky Mountains and all the way to Los Angeles. Our team has more than 25 years of experience in the program and has been awarded 45 assignments nationwide.

Passenger Rail

As a national leader in transit services, we have been at the forefront of transit and passenger rail advancement for more than 50 years.  From the initial stages of planning to celebratory ribbon-cuttings, our planners, engineers, and managers take a vested and focused interest in improving the quality of public transit in the United States.

Our solutions improve the livability of communities, encourage social and business connections, and empower patrons. Our comprehensive planning, design, construction, and program management services assist transit agencies in completing critical state-of-good-repair projects and advancing ambitious capital improvement projects that transform the traditional images of transit. Whether it’s maintaining a streetcar/trolley, implementing or expanding light rail passenger systems, or developing new transit solutions such as bus rapid transit and high-speed rail, we have the breadth of experience and expertise to meet your goals.
