Public Spaces

RelaxConnect, and Play

Public spaces enhance the quality of life for the communities in which we live, work, and play. Our planners, engineers, and construction personnel develop trail networks, parks, and recreational facilities that connect people to opportunities to enjoy nature and exercise.

  • Planning
  • Design
  • Construction

Our Planning Group develops creative ideas and innovative designs to provide a realistic assessment of feasibility, cost, and performance of public spaces. With each project, we bring a long-standing commitment to consensus building and an emphasis on identifying approaches that work for the community as a whole. We work closely with community leaders, residents, business leaders, and our clients to develop planning and policy documents in the context of public concerns and interests.

Public spaces help reduce congestion, offer recreational opportunities, and provide environmental, economic, and health benefits. Our experts are there from start to finish, offering a full range of project development services from analysis of existing conditions to development of concepts.  We can also recommend policies, provide realistic cost estimates and funding strategies, and review projects for feasibility.

We prides ourselves on strong teamwork. We create a partnering atmosphere with stakeholders to deliver quality projects on time and within budget. We tailor our services to meet your needs across all stages of the project lifecycle, from project inception through contract closeout. Our experienced construction professionals understand that you have specific goals for your project.  By recognizing your goals and understanding the intricacies of the construction process and key project components, we are able to deliver your vision.

Site Design

A well-designed site is a vital component for the development of any public space.  We provide our commercial, industrial, and institutional clients with a full spectrum of services to meet their needs.

We regularly partner with our clients to set project goals that are accomplished through our dedication to technical expertise and personal service. Our multi-disciplined staff will work in close coordination with you to identify problems, navigate complex municipal and environmental permitting regulations and codes, and plan, design, and deliver a successful project.

Environmental

We excel at balancing the economic, environmental, and social issues associated with the development of public spaces, and we seek opportunities to partner with clients so projects lead to an improved quality of life for present and future generations. We pride ourselves on turning blighted properties and aging infrastructure into livable, sustainable hubs of the community.

We are dedicated to providing responsive environmental consulting services with a focus on delivering cost-effective, comprehensive solutions to the most complex environmental issues faced by our public, private, and industrial clients.

Our integrated, multi-disciplinary team is highly skilled in environmental project management, communication, and all facets of project delivery. From a public space project perspective, our team of experts is well-versed in:

  • NEPA compliance
  • Permitting
  • Sustainability initiatives
  • Soil and material management
  • Hazardous material investigations
  • Phase I/phase II environmental site assessments
  • In-situ/ex-situ and risk-based remediation
  • Site development/stormwater management

Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing & Fire Protection

Sustainability and resiliency are important factors to consider for your public space.  We have more than 40 LEED-accredited professionals who are focused on sustainable design practices. Energy efficiency, energy recovery, water reuse, and minimization of resources are incorporated into all designs. Many of our projects are designed to meet or exceed the criteria for LEED certification and EPA Energy Star designation in addition to ASHRAE 189.1 compliance requirements.

Our services in this area include:

  • Building and property assessments
  • Code studies
  • Energy conservation/life-cycle costing
  • Design/build – Fast-track or conventional
  • Life safety systems – fire suppression, alarms, smoke control systems
  • LEED project management
  • Energy modeling
  • Renewable energy studies
  • Feasibility studies
  • Cost estimating and value engineering
  • Construction monitoring
  • Building information modeling

Surveying

A study of existing conditions, a topographic survey, and analysis of past land use are the basis of every design. Our field surveyors use today’s technology to pick up existing features in and around your project area.

Materials & Soil Testing

Our in-house materials testing laboratory and industry knowledge meet all your laboratory, geotechnical, and field inspection needs.  Our laboratory is AASHTO accredited, regularly inspected by AMRL (AASHTO Materials Reference Library) and CCRL (Cement Concrete Reference Library), and validated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

Our laboratory services include:

  • Soils
  • Concrete
  • Aggregates

Stormwater Management

As many public spaces look to improve their sites for visitors and the surrounding communities, designers need to find new ways to seamlessly incorporate stormwater design. Our approach is to remember that each site is unique and brings its own constraints, challenges, and opportunities. This often requires a multi-pronged design methodology and demands economically creative and aesthetically pleasing solutions.

For many years, stormwater design consisted of routing stormwater through pipes and either getting it off the surface or to grass basins with large footprints—unusable open spaces with no function other than to manage the largest storms. Today’s stormwater design features a combination of green stormwater infrastructure and non-structural best management practices (BMPs) to manage runoff in lieu of more costly underground or structural solutions.
