A once-overlooked alleyway in Philadelphia’s historic Old City has become a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly public space. Urban joined city officials, community leaders, and project partners to celebrate the ribbon-cutting of the Commerce Street Connector, a revitalized corridor near 4th and Market Streets that enhances pedestrian connectivity, creates opportunities for community gatherings, and contributes to a more welcoming environment.
“We’re proud to have contributed to the success of the Commerce Street Connector,” said Urban’s Angelo Waters, PE, LEED AP, Senior Vice President, Integrated Engineering Services Business Unit Director. “This project is a great example of how Urban’s multidisciplinary Integrated Engineering Services (IES) team brings together expertise in project management, value engineering, public involvement, and construction management and inspection to help turn a community vision into reality. It’s especially rewarding to be part of a project that makes a positive and lasting impact right here in Philadelphia.”
Urban provided project management, value engineering, public involvement, and construction management and construction inspection (CMCI) services, helping guide the project through construction while supporting its schedule and budget.
Previously used as a service alley for businesses along Market Street, the corridor has been converted into a landscaped pedestrian pathway and garden. The new space connects Old City and gives residents, workers, and visitors a place to walk, sit, and gather.
The project began in 2017 as an initiative led by Old City Green and community advocate Joe Schiavo, with support from a Community Design Collaborative planning grant. In 2021, the Independence Historical Trust incorporated the project into its vision framework for improving public spaces and pedestrian connections throughout Philadelphia’s historic district.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony brought together representatives from the organizations involved in the project. Speakers included:
The Independence Historical Trust, Old City Green, Old City District, City of Philadelphia, Philadelphia Parks & Recreation, Philadelphia Industrial Development Corporation, and the project's design and construction teams completed the project. Old City Green and Old City District will maintain the space.
The Commerce Street Connector is part of ongoing efforts to improve walkability and public spaces throughout Old City. Urban is proud to have supported the project and contributed to a new pedestrian connection for the Philadelphia community.
