Urban Engineers Inc. is pleased to have been a part of the project team responsible for the successful reconstruction of the historic Montgomery Avenue Bridge between 29th Street and Sedgley Avenue in Philadelphia. The bridge was recently unveiled during a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Mayor Cherelle L. Parker and other regional leaders. This landmark is a key link between the Strawberry Mansion and Brewerytown neighborhoods and has been undergoing restoration since 2021. The project was completed in collaboration with Buckley & Company, Inc., the Philadelphia Department of Streets, and several local government entities.
The $17.2 million rehabilitation project restored the bridge's structure deficiencies, enhancing its safety and longevity. The restoration's key features included preserving the century-old structure's original brickwork and incorporating energy-efficient street lighting with designs inspired by historic gas-lit fixtures. The updated bridge also features reinforced concrete walls designed to maintain the aesthetic of the original architecture.
The project was made possible through local and federal funding. An impressive 80% of the $17 million budget came from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL). BIL funding has allowed the city to invest in public works like this bridge and other ongoing infrastructure projects throughout Philadelphia.
Urban is proud to have participated in this project by providing comprehensive construction management, thorough construction inspections (CMCI), and detailed constructability reviews.
"Urban Engineers is proud to have contributed to this essential project, which included preserving the bridge's historical significance while meeting current infrastructure needs," said Antonio Ditri, Associate Vice President- Practice Leader, Constructability at Urban Engineers. "The 29th and Montgomery Avenue Bridge is a key infrastructure to Philadelphia, providing access to surrounding communities."
