Transportation Demand Management (TDM) is an approach designed to decrease drive-alone trips and enhance the effectiveness of our transportation systems by promoting alternative transportation options.
September 16 - 20 is National TDM Week. The week raises awareness of the importance of safe and reliable travel options for all users in the transportation planning process and encourages employers to adopt TDM practices that help reduce their employees' commutes' carbon footprint.
Urban supports TDM using our multimodal projects to improve transportation efficiency and sustainability. These projects help integrate different modes of transport for a smoother and greener travel experience.
We have worked on several parts of the Schuylkill River Trail in Philadelphia, providing safe, accessible paths for walking and biking along the river. These projects expand the trail network, making traveling through the city easier without relying on cars.
The Rail Park project in Philadelphia supports alternative transportation by providing a car-free space for walking and biking that connects several neighborhoods. Transforming old rail lines into a public green space encourages more people to walk or bike instead of driving. Its location near public transit stations also makes it easier to combine different forms of transportation, like biking to a station and taking the train.
Urban developed the Cumberland County Bike and Pedestrian Safety Plan, which won national and state awards. The plan promotes TDM by improving infrastructure for walking and biking, creating safer, more accessible routes. By connecting key areas and enhancing safety, it supports a variety of transportation options and encourages non-motorized travel.
TDM Week is a time to celebrate the achievements of transportation professionals, advocates, and organizations dedicated to making travel more sustainable and efficient. It's an opportunity to collaborate and spark new ideas within the industry.
