Schuylkill Banks - Christian Street to Grays Ferry Crescent

Trails can provide transportation equity by offering an alternative and accessible mode of transportation that serves a wide range of people, regardless of income, age, or physical ability.

The Schuylkill River Trail is a multi-use path that will eventually extend 120 miles in Southeast Pennsylvania. The trail travels from Schuylkill County through Montgomery, Chester, and Berks Counties to Philadelphia. Currently, there are approximately 75 completed miles of trail sections.

Urban has provided services to several built sections of the Schuylkill River Trail, most recently to the Christian Street to Gray’s Ferry Crescent segment. This portion is the final link needed to provide an entirely off-road route between Center City and the Grays Ferry Crescent for pedestrians and bicyclists.

The project initially presented difficulties due to the area being industrially active and the riverbank narrowing for a portion of its length. To overcome these challenges, a $45 million cable-stayed bridge will be constructed along the east side of the Schuylkill River. The project is on track to be completed in 2025.

The completed trail segment will improve transportation options for South and Southwest Philadelphia residents by providing a safe, reliable, and affordable means of transportation directly to Center City. Allowing residents to access Center City for recreational activities and, more importantly, jobs.
