Urban provided District 8-0 with preliminary and final engineering services for this bridge replacement project.
Acknowledging that North Reading Road is a major roadway and many local businesses are dependent on those traveling locally within northeastern Lancaster County, replacing the existing structure in stages was necessary. Concerned over its condition if the existing structure was partially demolished, PennDOT, District 8-0, asked Urban to establish a scheme that would bypass the existing structure during initial stages of construction. Our unique solution was a single-lane structure adjacent to the existing bridge where traffic, with help from a temporary traffic signal, was maintained during the latter stages of construction. With sidewalks proposed, the final stage included installing a concrete barrier and pedestrian handrail. This involved special detailing on the construction plans to account for installation.
We performed preliminary and final engineering services to replace a two-span bridge structure spanning Cocalico Creek in East Cocalico Township, Lancaster County. We prepared roadway, structure, erosion and sedimentation, and maintenance and protection of traffic/signal plans for bid. Our team also prepared the PS&E package for bid. The existing two-span wide flange steel beam bridge was replaced with a 95’-0”, single-span P/S concrete spread box beam bridge.
