Meet Tim James, a Civil Engineer within Urban's Highways department. Tim's journey into the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (A/E/C) field began with a curiosity about tackling climate change through smart, sustainable transportation solutions and urban design.

Tim attended Florida State University, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and completed specialized courses in transportation, stormwater, and environmental engineering.

Tim is passionate about creating efficient and sustainable urban spaces, and his work as a civil engineer reflects that dedication. His favorite projects to date are the roundabouts proposed along York Road in Buckingham Township and Belmont Avenue in Bala Cynwyd, both in PennDOT District 6-0. These projects allowed him to enhance his skills and expertise in drainage, stormwater management, and intersection layouts. He also worked with the latest design software, such as OpenRoads, while collaborating with a supportive team of experts.

Tim's work goes beyond the technical aspects of his role. He actively participates in Urban's employee resource group, the Urban Young Members Forum (UYMF). Volunteering as a panelist for the PE Exam Preparation event for UYMF was a rewarding experience for him. This opportunity encouraged him to reflect on his career journey and motivated him to pursue new challenges.

Tim's advice to those starting in the field is this: "In your career's early days, stick with a firm that makes it easy to try many different aspects of civil engineering or see various project types and sizes. It also helps to have many colleagues who differ from you in age, experience, and expertise. You want teammates who are glad to chat so you can tap them for help or advice."

Outside of his professional life, Tim is an avid reader of subjects like science fiction and early US history. He enjoys visiting nearby quaint towns and nature trails with his wife and dog, writing letters to family and friends, listening to music, and learning to play his favorite tracks on the guitar.
