Urban is proud to announce that the firm has been honored with a Distinguished Award by the American Council of Engineering Companies of New Jersey (ACECNJ) for its work on the Main Street (CR 533) Safety Improvements Project in downtown Manville, NJ.

In collaboration with the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority (NJTPA) and Somerset County, NJ, Urban transformed a 1.5-mile corridor that was previously one of the county’s most hazardous areas for pedestrians.

“This recognition reflects the dedication and expertise of our New Jersey team,” said Urban’s President and CEO, James A. Bilella, II, PE. “We are proud to contribute to a safer, more welcoming Main Street in Manville that benefits the entire community.”

The project focused on enhancing safety, accessibility, and mobility for all users, including motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists, while supporting a more vibrant downtown community. The Main Street corridor has experienced 539 crashes over the past several years, underscoring the urgent need for improved traffic safety measures.

Urban designed and implemented critical improvements throughout the 1.5-mile corridor that featured 15 intersections. These improvements included a road diet; ADA-compliant intersections with curb extensions; Median pedestrian refuge islands for safer crossings; and upgraded traffic signals and Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs), among others.
