Urban was pleased to receive an Honor Award - Large Project from the American Council of Engineering Companies of New Jersey (ACEC/NJ) and a National Recognition Award from ACEC for design work on NJ TRANSIT’s Elizabeth Station Reconstruction. In collaboration with NJ TRANSIT, the revitalized station features enhancements designed to make travel smoother and more accessible for the public.
Serving over 7,500 weekday passengers, this critically important transportation hub underwent a $74.5 million renovation and expansion. New features include extended high-level platforms for additional boarding capacity, accessibility improvements, including renovated elevators and additional staircase access, and security and communications systems enhancements. The project also highlights NJ TRANSIT’S Transit Arts Program, which involved the implementation of architectural features and appurtenances, including a mural-lined tunnel and ornamental railings, reflecting the City of Elizabeth’s history as a transportation hub.
The original station, built in 1893, was last reconstructed in the 1980s. However, its condition no longer met current safety, convenience, or capacity needs. With modern features and better accessibility, the station sets a positive example for future transit projects. This renovation benefits the community by making travel accessible and more comfortable for everyone.
“We would like to congratulate NJ TRANSIT, Amtrak, and the firms involved in the successful completion of Elizabeth Station Reconstruction Project,” said Gary Etter, PE, Northeast Business Unit Director for Urban. “This is a vital project that will lead to growth and economic development, as well as provide safe public transportation access for all residents.”
