Urban Engineers Receives CMAA Mid-Atlantic Project of the Year Award

The vital infrastructure project, U.S. 1 Improvements, Section RC2 in Bucks County, PA, has been recognized by the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) Mid-Atlantic Chapter with the 2025 Project of the Year Award in the Mega Project over $100 million category, as well as the Overall Project of the Year Award.

The awards were presented at the CMAA Mid-Atlantic Chapter’s Annual Awards Gala, where Urban Engineers (Urban) accepted the honor alongside the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), District 6-0.

The U.S. 1 Corridor has seen increased traffic growth, with an average daily traffic of over 90,000 in 2025. Section RC2 is one of several mainline contracts under PennDOT's multi-phase program to reconstruct, widen, and improve travel on U.S. 1 and select intersections.

The Team Accepting Project of the Year Award US 1 RC2

On behalf of PennDOT District 6-0 under the direction of Edward Burns, Urban served as the Construction Management Consultant on the project, with Tom Kerins leading the effort as Urban’s Construction Manager. Antonio Ditri, Joseph Doubet, and Phil Panuccio provided Construction Engineering services, and Mark Smugar notably contributed to the project as the Scheduler who helped move the project completion date from August 2026 to a year early this summer.

To achieve this, the Team implemented strategic changes, including a revised Traffic Control Plan, which enabled the concurrent construction of two major bridges - the Northbound Neshaminy Creek Bridge and the Southbound Railroad Bridge. Early completion of the Southbound Railroad Bridge allowed a major traffic shift that advanced progress.

Urban managed sensitive operations throughout the project, including girder installations beneath live rail and power lines, archaeological preservation, and community-sensitive blasting, all completed with zero safety incidents and strong stakeholder support.

“We’re incredibly honored to be recognized by CMAA Mid-Atlantic,” said Tom Kerins. “This project was a true team effort by PennDOT, FHWA, JD Eckman, JMT, and many other partners. Urban is proud to be recognized for our quality services as we continue to create safer communities for all."

The U.S. 1 Improvements Program will enhance safety, mobility, and capacity along a critical transportation corridor. The recognition highlights the project's complexity, impact, and collaboration between public and private partners.
