Urban is proud to announce that Matthew Reese, PE, AICP, has been named the Outstanding Younger Member in Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) Activities by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). This award recognizes Matthew’s leadership and efforts to promote diversity and inclusivity in civil engineering.

As a licensed professional engineer and certified planner, Matthew has extensive experience in engineering and design. Matthew’s key projects include:

  • FDR Park Nature Phase

As part of the implementation of the FDR Park Plan, Matthew collaborates with the landscape architect and environmental team to enhance water flow and increase the park's capacity to manage water. The project aims to create a wetland habitat in the western half of the park, restore sections of Shedbrook Creek and Halfmoon Lagoon, and establish an ecosystem that supports native plants and wildlife. The initiative addresses the diverse needs of user groups across Philadelphia.

  • PHL Wetland Mitigation at FDR Park

This critical environmental restoration project enhances ecological sustainability while ensuring communities maintain access to high-quality green spaces. The project, part of a broader effort to offset wetlands impacted by airport expansion, integrates climate resilience with community needs by improving stormwater management, creating new wildlife habitats, and preserving recreational access for diverse users.

  • Wissahickon-Cross County Trail

This project connects the Green Ribbon Trail to the Wissahickon Trail, connecting diverse communities across Montgomery County and Philadelphia, while prioritizing access to outdoor recreation, multi-modal transportation, and environmental stewardship.

Matthew has received numerous honors throughout his career. He was previously recognized on the Philadelphia Business Journal’s ‘40 Under 40’ List and earned ASCE Region 2’s Outstanding Diversity and Inclusion Award in 2023.

“Matt’s dedication is inspiring. His leadership is shaping a more inclusive future for the industry, and we are incredibly proud to see him recognized by ASCE for his impact,” said Mike Thomas, Vice President, Site/Civil at Urban Engineers.

“I’m honored to receive this recognition from ASCE,” said Matthew Reese. “Creating a more inclusive industry is a collective effort, and I’m grateful to work alongside so many dedicated professionals committed to making a difference. I look forward to continuing to advocate for justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion in civil engineering.”
