We conceive, design, and engineer economically viable transit systems that connect communities.
Public transportation is fundamental to an effective transportation network. Throughout our history, Urban has provided engineering and planning services for bus, light rail, heavy rail, and commuter rail.
Transportation is linked to economic health and quality of life. Urban develops and evaluates transit solutions. Our aim is to positively impact mobility, long-term sustainability, economic stability, safety, and security. Our planners are responsive, communicative, and proactive when working with the public to generate awareness about a project and envision its desired future.
While navigating the planning process, we address the needs of a diverse group of stakeholders. These include transit agencies that balance capital improvements with operational and budgetary constraints; local and regional communities/governments that desire expanded transit networks; and patrons that require reliable, economical services.
We produce cost-effective, sustainable, Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant solutions for new intermodal transportation hubs and historic station renovations. Our diverse team includes railroad designers who focus on track, electrification systems, and wayside facilities; engineers who understand bus/rail maintenance facilities and operations; and engineers, architects, and LEED-certified professionals.
Our construction and program management groups provide input during design. The result of this early collaboration is often reduced costs and construction time.
We often work with our in-house environmental group to plan and implement projects or review environmental assessments completed by others. We have used this ability for a more thorough environmental review to our clients’ advantage on projects throughout the nation.
Transforming a project from concept to reality requires strict cost, scheduling, and task control.
Our construction management group is annually ranked among the top firms in the United States by Engineering News-Record. Professional Engineers, Certified Construction Managers, and former contractors comprise the team. Their proactive approach, which focuses on communication, helps avoid conflicts that result in delays and additional costs.
We have also developed project control procedures to address the challenges related to work on or near active railroads.
Imagine communities transformed into connected, livable, sustainable centers of economic growth supported by transit and passenger rail networks. Urban has helped turn this vision into reality.
As a Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Program Management Oversight Consultant (PMOC) and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) Monitoring and Technical Assistance Contractor (MTAC), Urban is one of a select group of engineering firms qualified to oversee capital programs throughout the country. We have overseen, managed, and supported PMO assignments totaling more than $50 billion in the New York area alone, through our work on New York City’s East Side Access and Second Avenue Subway projects. We also provide PMO services for Los Angeles' Westside Purple Line subway extension and Regional Connector projects. Urban has partnered with the FTA for more than 25 years on more than 40 assignments throughout the United States. We continue to support the FRA throughout their Central Region.
