Rugnab Wahadi “Bangs” Bangura, PE, is managing the construction of a New York City Economic Development Corporation (EDC) streetscape improvement project in Harlem. The $19 million project involves improvements on West 125th Street from the Harlem Piers to the west and Old Broadway to the east. Bangs began doing community improvement projects like this with the EDC after working on the Meadowlands project, and the $47 million Metropark Station renovation for New Jersey Transit. The client liked him and he has been engaged in this type of work ever since.

“I thought I would always work on bridges and railroads,” he said. “Regardless, my main objective is to succeed. The Project Managers at the EDC have put their trust in me. That makes me work even harder to meet their goals and objectives.” A major challenge for the current project will be utilities; namely, the installation of a 48-inch steel water main at the intersection of West 125th and Broadway Streets. “Manhattan is a mystery – a complex web of utility lines,” he said. “In some areas underground, they cannot be identified by agencies or even the utility companies.” Additionally, he will be working hard to keep local businesses happy during construction. “I take it personal, but in a good sense,” he said. “I consider my every action reflects the company. That gives me the discipline to relate to all the different personalities carefully and professionally.”
