Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA) has selected Urban Engineers (Urban) to lead the design of a proposed 1,000-space parking lot expansion of BuffaloNiagara International Airport’s (BNIA) parking facilities.

The design work includes parking lot pavement, drainage systems, geotechnical investigations, stormwater management, lighting, fencing, airport shuttle shelters, security and video surveillance systems, signs and striping. “The project is challenging because of its accelerated schedule, said Urban’s Project Manager Joseph Polchlopek, PE. “The design work is expected to take place during the fall and winter months, with construction to start by early summer.”

Collaborating with Urban on the design work will be Parsons Brinckerhoff, Inc., Arora Engineers, Inc., Watts Architecture and Engineering D.P.C. and Foit Albert Associates. Additional stakeholders include the Federal Aviation Administration, National Weather Service, New York State Department of Conservation and various utility companies. Urban has served the NFTA on previous assignments such as the award-winning, nationally-recognized glycol treatment facility at BNIA, in addition to the Metro Rail in downtown Buffalo.

“We are thrilled to continue our professional relationship with the NFTA, which began over 30 years ago, said Urban’s Buffalo Office Manager, Paul Parker, PE. “The project will be a great opportunity to showcase our civil engineering design and management expertise at an important regional transportation hub.”
