Amtrak Washington Terminal Yard High-Speed Rail Infrastructure Improvements

Washington, D. C.

Amtrak’s Washington Terminal Yard (WTY) is the primary running maintenance location for the Northeast Corridor (NEC) fleet of electric locomotive and Amfleet coaches. WTY, which includes maintenance shops and a coach yard, requires substantial infrastructure improvements and upgrades in preparation for future services and proposed improvements for Washington Union Station.

Urban is leading and managing this large and complex project. We are also performing the majority of the design work.

The project is critically important to the future of high-speed rail on the NEC and includes design of facilities for storing, servicing, diagnosing, and repairing the new Tier III Next Generation high-speed rail trainsets that Amtrak is procuring to replace the Acela fleet. This project also involves yard infrastructure improvements to accommodate operational growth on the NEC both prior to and after completion of the Gateway program.

 Highlights

  • Additional storage tracks and turntable radial stub tracks
  • Electrification of existing and new tracks and modifications to existing OCS and traction power systems
  • Modifications to existing signals system and construction of new signals for controlled track
