A long-time resident of Erie, PA, Matthew Seth’s, PE, LEED® AP BD+C, favorite part of his job at Urban Engineers is seeing his designs become reality. So, whether he’s sailing along Erie’s Bayfront or relaxing next to the new, 200,000 gallon Wild Waters Wave Pool at Splash Lagoon Indoor Water Park Resort, he is motivated by the understanding that his projects have provided the foundation from which his hometown will reach new heights and greater expanses. This awareness guides every ribbon of steel and concrete he designs.
Recently, Matthew collaborated with Clyde Bergemann EEC (CBEEC), to provide structural design for a retrofit of NRG’s coal-fueled power plant in Dunkirk, NY. This unique project provided NRG with state-of-the-art environmental control systems which reduce the plant’s impact on the environment. The project required structural retrofits to install over 6,000 linear feet of elevated ductwork (nominal 16.5' square) lined with concrete, weighing in the neighborhood of 500 pounds per foot of length. The entire existing structure was upgraded and modified so that the new ductwork could run through the existing building, with new support towers designed so that the ducts could run up and over the existing ones. In addition to his technical role on the project, Matthew corresponded daily with CBEEC to resolve project challenges as they developed.
