Urban is proud to announce that it has been selected by Aker Philadelphia Shipyard, Inc. (APSI) to perform on-site electrical design, engineering, testing, and commissioning support services for the construction and delivery of two Veteran MT46 product tankers and two Liberty MT115 Aframax crude oil tankers.

APSI is constructing the two 46,000 ton deadweight MT46 product tankers for delivery in late 2012 and early 2013, respectively. In September, APSI finalized an agreement with SeaRiver Maritime Inc., ExxonMobil Corporation’s United States marine affiliate, for the construction of two Aframax oil tankers for delivery in 2014. At 820 feet in length and measuring over 115,000 tons deadweight, they will be the largest ships built by the yard to date.

APSI shipyard is located along the Delaware River in The Navy Yard of Philadelphia, PA. APSI aims to produce tankers and container ships within the Jones Act, which requires that all goods transported by water between US ports be carried in US-flag ships, constructed in the US, owned by US citizens, and crewed by US citizens and US permanent residents. APSI is a member of the Norwegian-based Aker family of global companies.

“We are proud to assist Aker Philadelphia in their commitment to building safe and reliable ships, whose production creates thousands of jobs for Americans,” stated Urban’s President and CEO, Edward M. D’Alba, PE.
