Urban Wins Connecticut Project

The South Western Regional Planning Agency (SWRPA) has selected Urban to provide transportation planning and engineering services for its Route 1 Greenwich-Stamford Operational Improvements Plan Project.

The purpose is to develop a coordinated plan to improve traffic operations on Route 1, improve pedestrian safety, manage access, accommodate transit, and enhance the corridor’s economic potential. The plan will consider enhancements to traffic flow or operations, as well as urban design and development opportunities. There are many opportunities to address the corridor issues in the plan including:

  • Devising strategies for access management to reduce curb cuts, increase safety, and reduce the frequency and location of driveway to minimize friction and increase and preserve corridor capacity;
  • Developing transportation systems management applications, such as additional turn lanes, turn prohibitions, curb radii adjustments, and signal coordination and interconnection to enhance progression;
  • Improving pedestrian and bicycle accommodations;
  • Identifying and further defining development nodes and expand on the pedestrian mobility and safety in these nodes;
  • Developing strategies to promote smart growth and transit-oriented development; and
  • Identifying opportunities for coordination and integration with other SWRPA efforts.

The resulting transportation plan will offer recommendations and a strong implementation plan that will allow Route 1 to contribute, within the context of its varying character and multiple roles, to the quality of life and economic vitality of the community.
